What is it about courier girls?<\/p>\n

Odd synchronicity\/confirmation bias as I read last night.\u00a0 I finished Zero History<\/em><\/a> and read issue #1 of Image’s new comic Nonplayer<\/em><\/a>.\u00a0 Both feature characters I hereby declare to be a sci-fi archetype:\u00a0 the aforementioned Courier Girl.<\/p>\n

Examples, you ask?\u00a0 Fine.<\/p>\n

Zero History<\/em>: Fiona.<\/strong> London courier working for Bigend (kinda).\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Young, attractive, cool, streetsmart, competent.\u00a0 Motorcycles about town with ease in her deeply scratched yellow helmet.\u00a0 Rides an unremarkable Kawasaki<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Nonplayer: <\/em>Dana. <\/strong>Not sure yet where she lives.\u00a0 A city.\u00a0 Future.\u00a0 Spends a lot of time playing an MMO.\u00a0 Young, attractive, cool, streetsmart, competent.\u00a0\u00a0 Delivers tacos.\u00a0 (Note:\u00a0 this comic is gorgeous.\u00a0 Go and buy it.)<\/p>\n

Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World<\/em>: Ramona Flowers.<\/strong> Amazon delivery staff in Toronto.\u00a0\u00a0 Young, attractive, cool, streetsmart, competent.\u00a0 Vehicle of choice: Rollerblades.<\/p>\n

But where did all start?\u00a0 To my knowledge: Y.T. from Snow Crash<\/em><\/a>.<\/strong> It all goes back to Y.T. (short for Yours Truly). \u00a0 Kourier in post-fall Los Angeles.\u00a0 Angrily independent, dangerous, smart, and did I say dangerous already?\u00a0 Deals with a mafioso,\u00a0 a hacker\/swordfighter\/Cosa Nostra pizza Deliverator, cops, creeps, and a very scary obsidian-knife-wielding Aleutian without batting an eye.\u00a0 She rides a smart-wheeled<\/a> skateboard down the highway, magnetically harpooning herself to the cars for speed.\u00a0 She’s it, man.\u00a0 Do.\u00a0 Not.\u00a0 Mess.<\/p>\n
